Game Freak Hit by Major Cyberattack, Leaks Include Future Pokémon Game Titles

Game Freak, the renowned developer behind the Pokémon franchise, has suffered a cyberattack that has led to the unauthorized leaking of internal information. The Game Freak cyberattack, which was acknowledged by the company on October 13, 2024, has revealed a trove of sensitive data, including source code, unreleased game details, and personal information of employees.  

The cyberattack on Game Freak appears to have occurred in August 2024, when a third party gained access to the company’s servers. In their official statement, Game Freak confirmed that the breach resulted in the leak of personal data belonging to 2,606 individuals, encompassing both current and former employees. The leaked information primarily includes names and company email addresses.  

In response to the incident, Game Freak issued an apology to all affected parties, stating: “We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused to all involved.” The company is currently reaching out to those impacted by the breach, providing a contact point for inquiries, reported Game Freak via a press release. 

The Scope of the Game Freak Cyberattack

Beyond personal information, the Game Freak cyberattack has reportedly led to the exposure of substantial internal assets. This includes source code for multiple Pokémon titles and developmental details for future projects.

Notably, the codename for the anticipated tenth generation of Pokémon—internally referred to as “Gaia”—has surfaced, along with information suggesting that the next Pokémon game is being tested for the upcoming Switch successor.  

Insider reports indicate that the upcoming title, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, is already complete and set to be released on Nintendo Switch systems in 2025. This game, first announced in February 2024, is set in Lumiose City and represents Game Freak’s ongoing commitment to expanding the Pokémon universe.  

Leaked Assets and Future Titles

The data breach at Game Freak has also unveiled previously unused Pokémon pixel art and beta designs from various generations, which have started to appear across social media platforms. These leaks not only compromise Game Freak’s upcoming releases but also provide fans with a glimpse into the creative processes behind beloved games.  

In addition to the leak of source code and project details, evidence suggests that there was a collaboration with another developer on a new Pokémon title, further highlighting the breadth of the information exposed during the cyberattack.  

The Cyber Express has reached out to the organization to learn more about this Game Freak cyberattack. However, at the time of writing, no official statement or response has been received.   

Company Response and Security Measures

Following the breach, Game Freak has committed to bolstering its security infrastructure to prevent similar incidents in the future. The company has already undertaken a thorough inspection and reconstruction of its servers.   

In their statement, they emphasized the importance of protecting sensitive information, noting that they are implementing enhanced security measures to mitigate future risks.  

Game Freak is not alone in facing data security challenges. Nintendo itself has previously experienced data leaks, including the infamous “gigaleak,” which saw a wealth of internal projects and source code exposed to the public.
