It was supposed to be just another boring school trip. You know the kind — the kind where you get on a bus with your classmates, everyone half-asleep or buried in their phones, and end up at some “educational facility†that no one cares about. But this one was different. This time, we were going to the CryoLabs Institute, a place where they freeze people.
“I heard they’ve got actual bodies in there,†my friend Kyle whispered as we stood in the school parking lot, waiting for the bus. His eyes gleamed with excitement.
“Yeah, right. They’re probably just doing animal experiments or something,†I muttered, trying to hide the uneasy feeling that was growing in my stomach.
To be honest, I wasn’t thrilled about the trip. The whole idea of freezing people, keeping them trapped in ice until some far-off future… it just gave me the creeps. But no one else seemed bothered. My best friend Lizzie even joked about it on the ride over.
“So, if they freeze people and then wake them up in like, a hundred years, do you think they remember anything?†she asked, nudging me.
I shrugged, staring out the window. “I dunno. I guess not. Otherwise, it’d be like one long nightmare.â€
She laughed, but I could tell she was a little freaked out too. The CryoLabs Institute loomed ahead of us, a sleek, white building surrounded by tall, barbed fences. A sign out front read “Pioneers in Cryogenic Science Since 2055”.
As the bus rolled to a stop, our teacher, Mr. Johnson, stood up. “Alright, class. Stay together, be respectful, and don’t touch anything you’re not supposed to. We don’t want anyone getting stuck in a freezer, right?â€
A few kids chuckled, but I could sense the unease spreading through the group.
Inside, the building was cold. Not freezing, but a chilly draft hung in the air. A scientist in a white lab coat greeted us with a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Welcome to CryoLabs Institute. We’ll begin with a tour of our main facility, where we preserve some of the most important figures in history.â€
Important figures? That piqued my interest. I thought they just froze people who were dying or wanted to be preserved for future medical breakthroughs. Who were these “important figures†she was talking about?
We were led down a long, sterile hallway with bright fluorescent lights buzzing overhead. The walls were a dull gray, and everything felt… off. It smelled like antiseptic and metal, and the sound of our footsteps echoed ominously.
The scientist led us to a large viewing window that looked into what they called “The Chamber.†Inside, row after row of metallic pods lined the walls, each one glowing faintly from within. I counted at least thirty.
“These are our cryogenic preservation chambers,†the scientist said, her voice professional and detached. “Each pod contains a subject who has chosen to be preserved until the day medical technology can safely revive them.â€
Lizzie nudged me again, her eyes wide with curiosity. “Can you imagine waking up in a hundred years? Everything you know would be gone.â€
I nodded, my gaze glued to the pods. Something about them didn’t sit right with me. They looked too peaceful, too still. It was almost like they weren’t sleeping… but waiting.
“Hey, check this out,†Kyle whispered, pulling me toward a small side door labeled Authorized Personnel Only. “Bet there’s some real creepy stuff back there.â€
I hesitated. Mr. Johnson and the rest of the class were distracted, listening to the scientist drone on about how the cryogenic process worked. It was now or never.
“Come on, we’ll just peek,†Kyle urged, grinning.
Against my better judgment, I followed him through the door. Lizzie joined us, though I could tell she was nervous. Inside was a narrow, dimly lit hallway that led to another room at the end. The air here was colder, biting at our skin.
“Why do I feel like we shouldn’t be here?†Lizzie whispered.
I nodded, but Kyle was already moving ahead. The room at the end of the hall was marked Experimental Chambers. Without hesitation, Kyle pushed the door open. It creaked on its hinges, and we stepped inside.
The room was dark, except for a few blinking red lights on some consoles. But the center of the room… that’s where it caught our attention.
It was another cryo-chamber, but this one was larger than the others. It stood alone in the center of the room, the glass frosted over. There were strange markings on the pod — symbols I couldn’t recognize.
“What do you think’s in there?†Lizzie whispered, her breath fogging up the air.
Kyle grinned, eyes gleaming with reckless curiosity. “Only one way to find out.â€
“No way, man,†I hissed, grabbing his arm. “We shouldn’t be here. Let’s just go back to the group.â€
But Kyle was already reaching for the control panel next to the pod. Before I could stop him, his fingers hovered over the button marked Activate.
“Wait!†Lizzie and I shouted in unison, but it was too late.
Kyle pressed the button.
The room went silent for a moment. Then, the pod began to hiss, a loud whooshing sound filling the air as the glass began to defrost. The lights on the console flickered to life, casting an eerie glow across the room.
The pod door slid open with a groan, releasing a burst of cold air. Inside was… a man. Or at least, something that looked like a man.
His skin was pale, almost translucent, and his eyes were shut tight. But his chest rose and fell slowly, as if he was breathing. There was something ancient about him, something that made my stomach twist in knots.
“We should get out of here,†I whispered, taking a step back. “Now.â€
But Kyle just stared at the figure in awe. “Do you think he’s alive?â€
Lizzie was already tugging at my sleeve, her face pale with fear. “Come on, Dan, let’s go.â€
I started to move toward the door, but then… the figure’s eyes snapped open.
They were black. Completely black. No whites, no pupils — just endless darkness staring straight at us.
“Kyle, run!†I screamed, but Kyle didn’t move. He was frozen, his eyes wide with terror.
The figure moved. Slowly at first, its limbs stiff and jerky, like it hadn’t used them in a long time. Then it stepped out of the pod, its black eyes locked onto Kyle.
I grabbed Lizzie’s arm and yanked her toward the door, but Kyle… Kyle didn’t move. He was rooted to the spot, his mouth open in a silent scream as the thing reached out and touched his face with long, bony fingers.
Kyle’s scream finally broke free, piercing the air as the figure’s hand… dissolved into his skin. It sank into him, like melting wax, disappearing into Kyle’s body.
Kyle’s eyes went black.
“No!†Lizzie screamed, dragging me toward the door.
We ran. We didn’t look back. We didn’t need to. Because when Kyle’s scream stopped, the sound that followed was worse.
A voice. Cold, hollow, and… familiar.
“I’m awake.â€
We burst through the door and back into the hallway, our hearts pounding. But something stopped us in our tracks.
The scientist. The one who had given us the tour. She was standing at the end of the hall, smiling. But her eyes… they were black too.
“You shouldn’t have woken him,†she said softly, her voice dripping with malice. “But now that you have, I think you’ll be staying here with us. Forever.â€
And then, from behind us, I heard Kyle’s voice.
“Hey guys, where are you going?â€
But when I turned, I knew. That wasn’t Kyle anymore.
The real Kyle was gone.
And the thing standing in his place… was hungry.
