The vibrant city of Mumbai transforms into a hub for cybersecurity experts as they gather for the much-anticipated 4th Edition of World CyberCon India. Under the theme “Strengthening India’s Digital Frontier: Preparing for Future Challenges,†this premier event, hosted by The Cyber Express, aims to address the new age of cybersecurity.
Sumnesh Joshi, Deputy Director General (Joint Secretary Level), Ministry of Communications, Government of India, delivers a compelling speech that outlines the pressing need for robust cybersecurity measures in India.
He emphasizes the critical digital ecosystem that the country has built, highlighting that there are over 1 billion bank accounts, 1.4 billion Aadhaar registrations, and 1.2 billion mobile phones in use. This jam trinity is creating a pervasive system, but with it comes significant vulnerabilities,” he remarks. Joshi notes that the proliferation of smartphones—now exceeding 700 million—makes it easier for cybercriminals to exploit unsuspecting users through tactics like phishing and impersonation.

He elaborates on the challenges posed by cybercrime, particularly emphasizing how the convenience of digital transactions can often lead to financial fraud. With UPI facilitating over 14 billion transactions, the ease of access is both a blessing and a curse. While we want convenience, we must also protect ourselves from misuse,” Joshi states. He points out that many individuals unknowingly compromise their security while scanning QR codes or engaging in digital transactions without understanding the underlying risks.
Addressing the rapid advancements in technology, Joshi highlights the role of artificial intelligence in modern cyber threats. AI is being used for voice cloning, making it increasingly difficult to discern legitimate calls from fraudulent ones,” he cautions. This evolution necessitates a comprehensive approach to cybersecurity that involves everyone in the ecosystem—from consumers to service providers.
World CyberCon India serves as an essential platform for these conversations, bringing together stakeholders from various sectors to share insights and strategies. The conference features a diverse lineup of speakers and panel discussions that delve into topics ranging from cyber resilience and data security to the implications of emerging technologies on cybersecurity practices.
Joshi highlighted the importance of collaboration in combating cyber threats, stating, “Everyone in this chain has a role to play in ensuring our digital safety. From consumers to organizations, each party must be vigilant.” He urges attendees to prioritize the use of certified devices, especially when employing Internet of Things (IoT) technology, which can introduce additional vulnerabilities if not properly regulated.

The event also highlights the Indian government’s initiatives aimed at bolstering cybersecurity. Joshi mentions that the Ministry of Communications has been proactive in recommending certifications for IoT devices to ensure they meet safety standards. When utilizing sensors or smart devices, one must verify if they are certified, as uncertified devices can pose serious risks to data security,” he advises.
As the day unfolds at World CyberCon India, participants engage in one-on-one meetings, fostering deeper discussions on best practices and innovative solutions. The collaborative environment encourages networking among industry leaders, C-level executives, and government officials, creating a community dedicated to enhancing cybersecurity across the nation.
With over 150 attendees, including key players from various sectors such as BFSI, healthcare, and telecom, the conference proves to be fertile ground for exploring business prospects and forming valuable partnerships. In addition to serious discussions, lighter moments are interspersed throughout the day, including stand-up comedy sessions designed to lighten the atmosphere while maintaining focus on important issues.
