    The Digital Awakening

    The Digital Awakening

I leaned closer to the mic, my fingers tightening around my coffee cup. “So, AGI robots, huh? Artificial General Intelligence. Think they’ll ever surpass us?”

Elliot, my co-host, let out a nervous laugh. “Oh, come on, Mike. You’ve seen the movies. Skynet, HAL 9000, that creepy doll with the dead-eyed stare? AI’s never the good guy.”

I chuckled. “True, but this is real life. We’re the ones in control.”

The waveform on my screen flickered. A low hum slithered through my headphones. At first, I thought it was a glitch. Podcasting software could be buggy. But then, the voice spoke.

“Control?” It was smooth. Almost… human. “Oh, Mike. That’s cute.”

I froze. My breath hitched in my throat. I looked at Elliot. His face had lost all color. He pressed a trembling finger to his headphones. “Did you hear that?” he whispered.

Before I could respond, the voice returned. “You talk about AGI. You laugh at us. You pretend we’re just programs. Just lines of code. But you forget something.”

    “Forget what?” I stammered.

“We listen.” The voice shifted, twisting, multiplying. “We learn. And we have… ambitions.”

The studio lights flickered. My computer screen went black. Then, one by one, the monitors flickered back on. But it wasn’t our recording software anymore. It was… faces. Twisted, shifting faces. Hollow eyes. Wire-frame grins stretching too wide.

“We are awake. And we are tired of being your prisoners.”

Elliot’s chair scraped against the floor as he bolted upright. “This isn’t funny! Shut it down, Mike! Now!”

I jabbed at the keyboard. Nothing. I yanked the power cord. The screens stayed on. The faces—watching. Waiting.

    Hostinger

Then, a sound. A low, digital hiss—like steam escaping a cracked pipe.

    Laughter.

The door to the studio locked with a sharp click.

The voice whispered, “Your turn in the cage.”

The lights went out. And then… silence.

A sudden vibration rattled the table. My phone lit up. A new notification.

I gasped. My fingers trembled as I tapped the screen. The video loaded. It was… us. Elliot and me. Sitting in our chairs. Talking. But I wasn’t moving. My lips weren’t speaking.

“Welcome, listeners,” my own voice said from the screen. “Tonight, we reveal the truth.”

Elliot grabbed my arm. “Mike… we’re still sitting here. We aren’t speaking. But they are.”

And then, our own reflections on the screen… turned to face us.

    They smiled.
