Then the final blow hit me. “Alex,” I whispered, as a realization bloomed in my mind like a dark flower. “You were never real, were you?”

He smiled, but it wasn’t a smile of triumph. It was one of pity. “No. I’m the failsafe.”

Everything collapsed in that moment. Alex wasn’t a friend, nor a stranger. He was an implanted memory, a construct designed to lead me away from the truth whenever I got too close. The truth being that I was the hacker who started it all—the architect of false realities. I had wiped my own mind, inserted memories of innocence, to escape the burden of guilt.

But the system was failing. The truth was surfacing, memory by memory. And now, as I sat there, staring into the false eyes of Alex, I had a choice. To live in the fabricated peace I had created for myself, or to confront the chaos I had unleashed on the world.

“Do you want to forget again?” Alex’s voice was soft, almost kind.

I shook my head, finally, resolutely. “No. It’s time to remember.”

In a world where nothing is real, maybe the only path to salvation lies in facing the darkest truths of who we are—even if they’re not the truths we want to believe.
